Why Must It Always End This Way?… Sometimes It Doesn’t Have To

by

This story begins from the first time that The Doctor notices River’s presence in the form of her data ghost roaming about his TARDIS. A bit of the Tenth Doctor and transitions into the Eleventh. However, River decides not to move on after the Doctor finally acknowledges her in TNOTD because neither one of them can let go.

“And then he was a new man: a younger-older man. And he could see a sort of twinkle of familiarity in River Song’s eyes even before he had seen himself. She laughed at him as he assessed his new body without the assistance of a mirror.

‘Not a woman, sweetie. Though, that might be interesting,’ she teased him through her laughter. ‘Maybe you ought to try it sometime.’ “

She spoke to him - always with such familiarity - as though this might be how they typically were. Her ghost’s presence made the temptation of a live River Song increasingly more difficult to say no to.”

(Fic will briefly mention things from “The Diaries of River Song” Big Finish audios and “The Day of the Doctor” companion book, but they are not prerequisites for your understanding.)
