The lift was caged on all sides by ornate trelliswork, the same pale wood as the tree, open to the cool salt air. River leaned back into the wall that faced the enormous tree trunk, the night breeze swaying her hair and ruffling the broad emerald leaves behind her as the lift moved smoothly and slowly skyward. She stifled a shiver that might have been the wind on her bare shoulders. Or it might have been the look her new husband was giving her from where he leaned against the opposite wall, head framed in a studded halo of white starlight filtering through the trellis, gangly legs angled into the middle of the floor so the toes of his shined dress shoes bumped against her worn boots.
