Clara doesn't know how to say what she's feeling. So, instead, she shows the Doctor. It's only a brief moment of tenderness but it's a glimpse of what goes on behind closed doors with these two and how they truly feel for one another. Maybe the Doctor tells her how essential she is to him and it surprises her.

His voice was lowered and she swore she could feel him lean into the hand that had delicately cupped his cheek. His eyes were so heavy with emotion now, and she could barely handle it.
