“I don’t want to go back,” she said, so softly he almost missed it. “We can’t go back. Things have changed.” He had heard that from her so many times. Often enough that it set his heart pounding and his blood rushing in anticipation of what was coming next. But when he opened his mouth to argue, she pressed her fingers over his lips. “I know what you’re going to say,” she said hurriedly. “That I haven’t been myself. I know I haven’t. But trying to be like we were before won’t work, either. We have to be something else. Something new.”

Returned to Earth after their travels with the Doctor, Ben and Polly struggle to find themselves, and each other.
