Careful not to make a sound, the Doctor edged a little closer to get a better look at teenager Yaz. Even in her earlier years, Yaz was still downright adorable. Her hair was shorter, just reaching her shoulder blades, and she had it loose instead of her usual plait or buns. Swallowing hard, the Doctor placed a hand against a tree trunk. Her hearts twinged in sympathy. She knew what was coming next, even if her little girlfriend didn’t.
Raucous, high-pitched laughter preceded the dramatic entrance of Izzy Flint. One hand clamping a phone to her ear, she used the other to push tendrils of honeycomb hair behind her ear, high ponytail swinging in time to her footsteps. Her cold blue eyes darted across the small park, skimming over the Doctor’s spot behind the trees and landing on Yaz. Lips twisting into a smirk, she said a loud goodbye to whoever was on the phone, announcing for all the world—and especially Yaz, whose shoulders were hunched—to hear that something unavoidable and very important had come up.
