Hell Is Other People

by

He’s running for his life through the castle, running – more to the point – for Clara’s life, and then out of nowhere there’s a door and he runs through it and slams it behind him; placing the dark, cherry-red wood between him and the abomination that stalks the castle corridors in pursuit of him and his confessions. I’m safe, he thinks to himself for all of ten seconds, and then he hears a shaky intake of breath and a strangled sob and he realises where he is and where he has sought refuge. Turning, he sinks into an armchair and looks into the face of a woman he has never met, who is holding up a picture that tugs at his hearts, and for the millionth time in this godforsaken torture chamber, he attempts to form an apology.
