Is it possible to update a single mysql column in a html table

Currently in my html page ive got a select tag where the user can select a file which they have uploaded onto mysql. This data is then displayed in a table on the html table using AJAX. What i want is the user to be able to then update a column in the mysql table which is empty with the users data they input either as text or using a select tag with a set of options they can use. How is it possible for me to do this ive been looking all over online and cant find anything to help me out. Thanks in advance
